Cashbox Machines to Provide Wifi Access

ATM Provider, Cashbox, has signed a deal with BT to offer Wifi services via their pay-per-transaction cash machines. Cashbox ATMs are strategically situated in areas where there aren’t many high street banks and thus few or no ATMs.

Cashbox CEO, Ciaran Morton has confirmed that ten ATMs will initially be part of a trial to serve as WiFi hotspots for BT Openzone. He also expressed hope that the number of ATMs offering Wifi would swell substantially over time if the initiative proves to be successful. The ten ATMs would include Tiger Tiger branches in London and Manchester. These are the areas where they anticipate users to most avail of the mobile internet access provided.

Cashbox has installed over 2500 ATMs across the UK that charge a fee for withdrawals. The assumption made is that an area with few or no other ATMs is not likely to have internet facilities. This is precisely the premise that Cashbox and BT are aiming to cash in on. The revenue share of Cashbox will be based on the minutes used per site, Morton has confirmed. If successful, this initiative may even start a trend amongst other ATM service providers to extend their services.

BT broadband customers who already have WiFi minutes in their packages, along with O2 iPhone, iPass and Boingo users will be able to access these Openzone hotspots.
